I have written a few children’s books and poems over the years, but when it was time for me to figure out what I wanted to publish first, I knew that I wanted it to be one about children and their emotions. Children naturally do not have filters like adults have been trained to have. They are real, they are raw and they are honest to a fault! That is one of the things that I love about them!
I believe that working with children is something that is just in my blood. I have always known that it is what I wanted to do. Over the years, I have worked at numerous schools and preschools and have always loved teaching kids the importance of understanding their feelings and how to manage them.
One of my favorite ways to teach children to express emotion is through music and art! I love to play different types of classical music and have kids free draw or free write what comes to mind. It always amazes me to see how each piece of music makes them feel and how they choose to express it in their art or the words they write.
Once children realize that their emotions are normal and valid, they are better able to express their feelings with an adult instead of acting out in ways that may hurt others or themselves. “Windy’s Big Feelings” helps kids to se that acting out every once in a while is normal, but they can always take a deep breath, calm down, and start over in the morning.
